Trapped Chilean miners

Okay, it looks like the 33 trapped miners in Chile could be stuck underground for another 4 months! Damn, and I complain about being stuck in a plane for 12hours...anyway, the following shows a nice simple schematic of the rescuing process.

First, a 33cm pilot hole is drilled down to the miners' location
Next, the hole is "reamed" with a wider drill to a diameter of between 60 and 70cm. Debris falls down the hole to the bottom
Thirdly, a rescue capsule is lowered down to the men and each is slowly brought to the surface

(BBC news)

and I just saw this headline 'Trapped Chilean miner sends wedding proposal to sweetheart'. WTH?! He doesn't even know if he can get out alive, to put his 'sweetheart' through this has to be one of the most selfish things someone can do.

  1. yeah i agree... that is very selfish! it is probably just momentary happiness for the 'sweetheart' to know that the person wanted to marry her; ending in greater heartbreaker later if he doesn't live.
crazy... should just propose AFTER the idiot has gotten out.

But in the diagram, the debris falls to the bottom - is that where the trapped miners are??

  2. sigh, what can you do? There are those selfish people everywhere in this world - it's rather sad (see my email)

good point! they say that the trapped miners have to work continuously to clean up the debris - maybe send it back up through another shaft (cos there is seriously no moving space for the 33 of them in a room that's smaller than my apartment)?!

  5. I'm really looking forward to scuba diving...it's apparently a 'lazy men's sport' so it's gonna be easy! It won't be hard on you I'm sure plus it'll be so much fun! :D I get really tired from lazying around for some reason esp on holidays - you can sleep in while I idk jog on the beach or explore in the mornings (I plan on getting 6hours or so of sleep while there)?!
